A: Our office will contact you 1-2 days prior to the procedure with specific instructions. Typically patients are told to remain NPO (nothing to eat/drink) after midnight before the procedure. We encourage patients to take their blood pressure medications with a SMALL sip of WATER the morning of the procedure. If you take insulin please be aware that you will receive special instructions for the day of surgery. If you take metformin/medications containing metformin or warfarin (Coumadin), you will be instructed to stop those medications for 3-5 days before the procedure. Please make sure to clarify this with office staff as circumstances can change with each individual. Shower the day of/night before surgery. Feel free to bring a snack/fluids to enjoy after the procedure. Make sure you are able to recover for 5 days post procedure. Most patients will require 5 days of light activity (no heavy lifting/bending/squatting).
A: Your family/friends can follow you through check in/preoperative prepping and you can reunite once the procedure is complete and you are in recovery. They are welcome to stay throughout your entire recovery or they can leave and we are more than happy to call them just prior to your discharge time.
A: You will NOT receive general anesthesia for the procedure. Most patients WILL be given moderate sedation by a sedation certified registered nurse or an anesthesiologist (depending on the procedure). These medications help to relax you and relieve discomfort/pain. MOST patients sleep during the procedure. Our goal is to provide adequate analgesia, without causing you to be overly sedated.
A: It depends on which procedure you are having done: An angiogram can take 1.5-2 hours, radiofrequency ablation can take 1-1.5 hours and vein injections can take from 30 minutes to 1 hour.
A: Typically, there is a recovery period of 4-6 hours after your procedure is complete. So the entire process can take all day, but you will be kept comfortable and happy. A dedicated registered nurse will be at your side throughout your recovery. You may bring reading materials, watch TV here or catch a nap while you recover. Feel free to bring a snack/fluids to enjoy after the procedure. We will give you juice or water and items to snack on (as long as you are not nauseous).
A: Yes, you will go home the same day.
A: If you are given any sort of sedation medicine for your procedure you MUST have a responsible adult drive you home. You MAY NOT drive yourself home after having sedation medicine. It is preferred that you NOT take a taxi home without a responsible adult in your company.
